Hijo de un obispo anglicano, Hugh Seymour Walpole nació en Auckland, Nueva Zelanda, en 1884 y fue enviado a estudiar a Inglaterra a los cinco años de edad. Participó en la Primera Guerra Mundial con el Russian Red Cross y fue condecorado con la Orden de San Jorge por su heróico rescate de un herido en medio de un incendio. Fue un incansable buscador y coleccionista de libros y manuscritos raros, en particular de relatos fantásticos. En 1924 adquirió Brackenburn, una propiedad rural en Cumberland (Lake District) donde construyó una biblioteca para alojar sus 30.000 volúmenes y un jardín escalonado con fuentes. En aquel “pequeño paraíso” vivió hasta su muerte en 1941. Hugh Walpole, nombrado Sir en 1938, escribió varias novelas autobiográficas como The Dark Forest (1916), The Secret City (1919) o Jeremy (1919), pero se dio a conocer al gran público con la “saga de los Herries”, novelas históricas de espadachines, con algunos episodios de magia y brujería, ambientadas en Lake District: Rogue Herries (1930), Judith Paris (1931), The Fortress (1932) y Vanessa (1933).
